About Lochthorn Dental Clinic

Lochthorn Dental Clinic is situated within Lochthorn Medical Centre – a purpose built facility based at Edinburgh Road, Dumfries. The centre offers a one stop service for all of your medical and dental needs, with an NHS medical practice, a private medical practice (including an aesthetic clinic), a complimentary medicine clinic and a pharmacy all under one roof.

The dental clinic is a fully compliant facility with step-free access, two surgeries and dedicated decontamination facilities offering a bespoke centre for the delivery of all aspects of NHS dentistry to the people of Dumfries and the surrounding areas. In addition, the clinic offers a full range of private dental treatments, together with a dedicated dental implant clinic offering all aspects of dental implantology. The clinic is extremely well served by local public transport and has plentiful off-street parking for those travelling by car.

Dr Philip Friel


(Practice Limited to Dental Implantology) Philip’s professional career has resulted from a long held passion for the study of dentistry and especially cosmetic enhancement work. Having graduated from Glasgow University with degrees in anatomy (1998) and dental surgery (2000), he attained membership to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 2004. In 2009 he was awarded entry to Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow without examination. Philip has a particular interest in dental implantology, including bone grafting, immediate implant placement and loading together with soft tissue surgery and has completed years of focused implant training and ongoing personal development in the area to ensure he can offer the best possible standard of patient treatment and care. His strong commitment to continued education means he travels extensively to train with and learn from globally recognised pioneers and experts of advanced cosmetic and implant techniques. Philip has been actively involved with the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) UK since around 2005 and is the immediate Past President of the Association. Dr Rita Lopes


Rita finished her dentistry degree in July 2013 at the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Porto, Portugal. She has been working as a General Dental Practitioner in Scotland since 2015, providing both NHS and private treatments to patients. Rita is passionate about all areas of dentistry, being a certified Invisalign Go provider and was recently a delegate of the UK Implantology Year Course at the Cambridge Academy of Dental Implantology. She demonstrates a professional and caring approach which has great results specially with anxious patients. GDC Number: 248102

Amanda Connell


Amanda graduated from University of Highlands and Islands in 2017, with a dual qualification in both Hygiene and Therapy. She has since been working locally in general practice and is keen to help all patients maintain a great standard of daily oral hygiene to ensure a long-term healthy smile.

At SDC Group, we believe in being completely transparent about the treatments we offer and their costs. Whether you are an NHS patient or are being seen on a private basis we will always explain your treatment options and the costs involved, prior to treatment commencing. Where there are a range of treatment options available to you, your SDC team will explain the benefits of each, allowing you to have all the information you need before choosing the clinic which best suits your needs.

NHS Treatment

NHS treatment is free for:

Everyone under 18 years of age
Those under 19 years of age and who are in full-time education
Pregnant and nursing mothers, until the baby is 12 months old
Those with certificated exemption from payment because of income.

Unless you are in one of the groups entitled to free NHS dental treatment or help with the cost, you will need to pay 80% of the total cost of your NHS dental treatment up to a maximum patient contribution of £384 per single course of treatment.
